Syllabus: A Pluralistic Perspective on the Mandate of Heaven
Instructor Perspective: Comparative Religion, Philosophy, and Political Theology
Course Description
This three-lesson seminar explores the Mandate of Heaven from multiple philosophical, spiritual, historical, and esoteric perspectives. Students will examine the classical Chinese understanding of divine legitimacy, compare it to other global concepts of sacred authority, and critically analyze how marginalized and syncretic spiritual traditions interpret cosmic order, leadership, morality, and spiritual legitimacy.
The course intentionally adopts a pluralistic framework, encouraging students to engage historical scholarship, religious studies, anthropology, political philosophy, and spiritual traditions with intellectual rigor and cultural sensitivity.
