Ed Fitch’s The Rites of Odin represents a specific moment in American Pagan history—a time when Gardnerian Wiccans were actively synthesizing Northern European material into workable modern traditions. Students should be aware that:
1. Historical accuracy varies — Fitch’s work is devotional and practical, not strictly academic. Use Jackson Crawford’s scholarship to ground your practice in historical reality.
2. Cultural sensitivity is essential — Norse paganism has been co-opted by extremist groups. The Troth and similar inclusive organizations provide ethical frameworks for practice.
3. The Blót is sacred — Even in modern simplified form, this is the central act of Heathen worship. Approach with reverence.
4. Words have weight — In the Sumbel, “words are deeds” (Wyrd & Flame). Speak with intention.
